Wheel Adapter Buyer's Guide
A wheel adapter is a bolt-on hub plate that converts your vehicle's bolt pattern to a different bolt pattern (for example, from 5×139.7 to 5×114.3) allowing you to mount wheels that would otherwise be incompatible. Like a wheel spacer, adapters also add a fixed thickness that pushes the wheel outward in the wheel well.
It is generally recommended to avoid wheel adapters when possible and instead opt for wheels that fit your car's original hub pattern. If you're set on mounting a specific set of wheels, wheel adapters might be right for you. This guide keeps it simple so you can decide whether wheel adapters are right for you and get fitment right the first time.
Hub Pattern Conversion
The primary function of a wheel adapter is to bridge two bolt patterns. When purchasing, you need to match two specifications:
A mismatch on either side will prevent installation entirely. You can find both specifications by searching online for your vehicle and wheel, or by measuring directly using the bolt circle diagram below.
Thickness
Each wheel adapter will have a given thickness that pushes the wheel more outward in the wheel well, similar to an wheel spacer. Check out the wheel spacer guide for more information for how to choose the right thickness for your vehicle and goals.
Center Bore
The adapter's center bore must be equal to or larger than your vehicle's hub diameter to fit over the hub. Where possible, match the center bore exactly to your hub diameter to achieve hub-centric fitment, which eliminates vibration and reduces stress on the wheel bearings. If the adapter's center bore is larger than your hub, hub-centric rings can fill the gap. See our hub-centric ring guide here for more information.
Material
Wheel adapters should be made from steel or billet aluminum. This ensures that they are strong enough to survive the stresses of driving. Given that adapter failure means losing a wheel, this is not an area to cut costs.
Thread Engagement
Wheel adapters have two thread interfaces, both of which must meet minimum engagement requirements. The minimum safe thread engagement is equal to the stud or bolt diameter. For example, a 12mm stud requires at least 12mm of thread engagement. Verify sufficient engagement for both stud interfaces.
Cautions and Trade-offs
-
Increased bearing stress: Adapters push the wheel further outboard, increasing the lever arm acting on the wheel bearing. This accelerates bearing wear over time. The thicker the adapter, the more pronounced the effect. For street use with modest adapter thickness, this is manageable. For track use, this is more of a concern.
-
Fender rubbing: Adapters push the wheel outward, increasing the risk of contact between the tire and fender, particularly on lowered vehicles or with aggressive fitments. Check for rubbing at full steering lock and over bumps before driving normally.
-
Altered scrub radius: Moving the wheel outboard changes the vehicle's scrub radius, which can affect steering feel and stability. This effect is more significant with thicker adapters.
-
General recommendation: If you can achieve your wheel goals without an adapter by selecting wheels with your vehicle's native bolt pattern, that is always the better path. Adapters are a solution for a specific constraint, not a preferred modification. If you're set on mounting a specific set of wheels, make sure you get the right wheel adapter by following the steps above.
Conclusion
Wheel adapters allow you to run wheels that don't natively fit your vehicle's bolt pattern. To choose correctly: match the input pattern to your hub, match the output pattern to your wheels, verify thread engagement at both interfaces, confirm center bore, and select the appropriate thickness for your fitment goals. Use billet aluminum or steel from a reputable manufacturer, and keep adapter thickness to the minimum necessary to minimize bearing stress.
