Hub-Centric Ring Buyer's Guide
Hub-centric rings center aftermarket wheels onto the wheel hub, preventing vibration. They act as an adapter, filling the gap between the wheel's center bore and the vehicle's hub. Hub-centric rings are defined by their inner diameter (ID), outer diameter (OD), and material. This guide walks you through everything you need to know to purchase the right set.
Why Use Hub-Centric Rings?
Aftermarket wheels are manufactured with an oversized center bore to fit a wide range of vehicles, so hub-centric rings are typically required any time you install a non-OEM wheel. For example, the most common center bore size for aftermarket wheels is 73.1 mm. If your car has a wheel hub measuring 56.1 mm, you'd need a hub-centric ring with an ID of 56.1 mm and an OD of 73.1 mm to properly fill that gap and achieve hub-centric fitment.
Without hub-centric fitment, the wheels are held in place by the lug nuts rather than the hub - known as lug-centric fitment. This can cause vibration as highway speeds. Over time, lug-centric fitment also places excess stress on the lug nuts and studs, which can cause them to loosen over time or even snap.
How to Find Your Measurements
Inner Diameter (ID): The ID of your hub-centric rings must match your vehicle's hub bore. Every make and model has a specific measurement, so look up your exact vehicle's specification. You can find this information online or in your vehicle's service manual.
Outer Diameter (OD): The OD must match your wheel's center bore. You can find this listed under the wheel's product specifications or stamped on the back of the wheel.
Material: Plastic vs. Aluminum
Once the wheels are torqued down, hub-centric rings bear no structural load. That means the material strength of plastic vs. aluminum is not a meaningful differentiator. What matters most is your driving application.
-
Plastic: Plastic rings are the most popular choice for daily drivers and street use. They're inexpensive, won't corrode, and make wheel removal straightforward. Plastic rings are rated to handle normal street driving temperatures, but can deform under the sustained high heat generated during track use.
-
Aluminum: Aluminum rings are better suited for high-temperature applications like track days because they won't melt. The downside of aluminum rings is that they can corrode and seize onto the hub, making removal difficult. If you're using aluminum, make sure to apply a thin layer of anti-seize before installation to make removal easy.
Installation Tips
-
Clean the hub surface before installing rings to ensure a snug fit.
-
Rings should snap into the wheel's center bore and stay in place during mounting. If they fall out, double-check your OD measurement.
-
Torque your lug nuts to the vehicle manufacturer's specification. Hub-centric rings don't change the torque requirement.
-
Re-torque lug nuts after the first 50–100 miles following any wheel installation.
Conclusion
Hub-centric rings are a simple, low-cost solution for properly fitting aftermarket wheels to your vehicle. To choose the right set, confirm your vehicle's hub bore (ID), your wheel's center bore (OD), and select the material that matches your driving application. When in doubt, plastic is a safe default for most street vehicles. You can find all the parts you need to plan your build on RideBuilder.
